Ryan Collier, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, presented “LEED v4 – Understanding the High Level Changes for Our Projects” during this weeks’ ID University. LEED v4 is the next iteration following LEED 2009 of the US Green Building Council’s standards for sustainable design and construction practices. This new iteration has undergone a considerable number of real-world beta trials provided on actual projects and is based on thousands of comments from the project teams and other industry professionals.
Ryan reviewed changes that are being introduced in LEED v4, including a new direction by USGBC to begin tailoring the rating system to specific building typologies, including data centers. Additionally, because many companies have created streamline methods for achieving certain rating tiers, USGBC introduced challenging new credits and credit categories to help continue to progress their sustainable agenda.
The presentation concluded with a review of pragmatic items related to the LEED v4 system, including fee schedules, project integration, and communication mechanisms that are setup for teams to communicate with USGBC as projects progress.
